Agent-Based Social Simulation in Archaeology
XXXVIII Annual Conference on Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology 6-9 April 2010. Granada, Spain.
SPECIAL SESSION ON AGENT-BASED SOCIAL SIMULATION IN ARCHAEOLOGY
(http://www.caa2010.org/index.php/proposed-sessions/57-agent-based-social...)
Over the last few years, the community of Agent Based Social Simulation (ABSS) has been developing techniques, tools and models that have been applied to social systems of different sorts. With respect to Archaeology, however, the application of ABSS has been modest in general terms although a few insightful experiences indicate a great potential for this field.
We propose a session to facilitate an exchange of views, experiences and techniques that may foster the development of this area. The call for contributions will be geared to bringing together three types of participants: researchers from conventional AI & Archaeology, ABSS practitioners and, specially, researchers who have already applied multi-agent systems techniques in archaeology. We believe that the research paradigm provided by the agent metaphor makes special sense when dealing with social relations and processes. Consequently, we are specially interested in creating a discussion about the methods and techniques used in the simulation in archaeology from the multi-agent systems perspective. Moreover we propose to put the emphasis, this time, on sociological aspects rather than the traditional focus on resource consumption and geographical information systems.
For these purposes we are interested in submissions on the following topics:
1. Simulation of social and economic behaviors
* Formal and agent models of archaeological social behavior.
* Cognitive modeling and social simulation.
* Social networks and simulated organizations.
* Social complexity: norms and institutions, emergence of
cooperation and coordinated actions, self-organization, micro-macro link.
2. Simulation Methodologies and Tools
* Standards for Archaeology MABS.
* Methodologies and simulation languages for archaeologists.
* Simulation platform and tools for MABS.
* Visualization and analytic tools.
* Approaches for large-scale simulations.
* Scalability and robustness in MABS.
* Validation Criteria.
3. Examples and Applications
SUBMISSION DETAILS
Submissions have to be done through the CAA 2010 website (http://www.caa2010.org/index.php/scientific-programme/full-papers).
Authors can submit extended abstracts of papers (max. 4 pages in A4 format) using the CAA style file which will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee. Please, use the conference system for submission of extended abstract. Extended abstracts should include text and images and include the aims and methods of the presentation. Extended abstracts are accepted with the condition that only presentations of innovative projects and methods will qualify as papers. The extended abstracts should contain the name(s) of the author(s), institutional affiliation, email address, the title of the presentation, the name of the session they would like to join (in this case AGENT-BASED SOCIAL SIMULATION IN ARCHEOLOGY), a few (3-5) meaningful keywords and the text.
After the CAA'2010 conference, an extended version of the accepted full papers will be required in order to be reviewed and published in several journals about Archeology and Cultural Heritage.
Important dates
* 15th December 2009
